Example report

A readable security position in one page.

The example below uses invented data to show reporting structure only. Actual client reporting must be grounded in evidence, a defined risk assessment method and authorised management review.

HeadingFictional example
Current priorityApprove stronger account-recovery controls for customer support
Material risk trendTwo issues closed; one newly escalated after vendor migration
Evidence statusFour of 38 planned reviews overdue; owner actions recorded
Supplier assuranceOne critical processor review awaiting updated assurance report
Customer commitmentsTwo questionnaires in progress; no unsupported positive control claims issued
Board decisionApprove remediation budget and deadline for access control exception
Next checkpointReview exceptions, the internal audit schedule and supplier follow-up

What the board should see

Prefer decision quality over dashboard theatre.

Every risk marker needs a clear definition and source. A green circle that conceals an untested control is worse than an honest amber decision request. Report meaningful change since last month, record what was accepted, and give leaders a short list of decisions they can actually take.

  • Top three risk changes and their causes
  • Risk and action ownership, due dates and blockers
  • Audit, certification and contractual deadlines
  • Exceptions requiring board or delegated-management approval
  • Evidence sources and limitations

Reporting roles

Assign the author, reviewer and decision maker.

An ISMS coordinator can maintain the source records. A qualified security lead interprets their significance and recommends priorities. Management remains responsible for approving risk tolerance, budget and material exceptions.

Keep the pack inside an access-controlled client environment. Never put confidential supplier weaknesses or live vulnerability details into public sample reports.

A more useful example

How the same issue appears differently to IT and the board.

IT's working record could contain configuration history, identifiers, implementation tasks and evidence links. The board paper should not reproduce all that operational detail. It should state what business exposure is understood, what is not yet known, who is accountable and which decision is requested.

For example, 'cloud backup restore test pending' is an operational status. The corresponding governance item could be 'approval needed for a protected test window so we can verify recovery objectives before renewal of an enterprise contract'. The underlying record must show that this framing reflects the actual recovery risk, not an invented urgent deadline.
